sex

It’s better than a HIIT workout, makes your skin glow more than expensive make up, keeps you healthy, lifts your mood and boosts self-esteem…and it’s fun! So instead of spending small fortunes on lotions and potions, slimming pills or a new dress just…. have sex!

Apart from making you feel great, sex is actually proven to be good for you—physically! Shona Wilkinson, Nutritionist at SuperfoodUK.com, the online shopping destination for all things health and wellbeing explains ‘Regular sex can boost your immunity, improves bladder tone, brings stress relief, keeps your heart healthy, improves the quality of sleep and can even help to get rid of pain”.

However, sometimes you might need a little bit of help to feel ‘in the mood’. We asked our experts to give us theirtop tips on how to boost your libido naturally and make your sex even better!

Work those muscles!

“One of the symptoms of pelvic-floor muscle problems is reduced sensation during sex. That’s why they need to be exercised regularly to keep them toned, just as you would work other muscles,” says Lynne Robinson, Pilates guru and founder of Body Control Pilates.

How to support your pelvic muscles? Lynne says “To get the best results it is very important that you work the right muscles in the right way. It is very easy to get it wrong. This is why specialist help is always best, if possible, although at the end of the day you will have to do the exercises yourself.  You will need to do different types of exercises as pelvic-floor muscles have different types of fibres (slow-twitch and fast-twitch fibre) and you will need to work both.”

Try two types of exercise to work strengthen both muscles. “First of all, slowly bring up your pelvic floor by contracting the muscles. Hold for a count of five and then gently let it down again. Work at this, several times a day, until you can hold the count for 15. The second type of exercise involves quick tightening and releasing of the muscles in the pelvic floor. Do it as quickly as you can, about 30 times”.

Herbs can be really useful too

Horsetail contains good amounts of silica that helps strengthen connective tissue generally in the body and also around the bladder. Silica is found in foods such as carrots, apples, onions, pumpkin, fish, almonds and unrefined grains,” says Dr Marilyn Glenville, the UK’s leading Nutritionist and author of Natural Alternatives to Sugar (www.marilynglenville.com).

Boost your mood naturally

If you don’t feel healthy, it’s extremely hard to feel sexy

So, as a first stop, make sure you eat a healthy diet. “Good-quality unsaturated fats come from oily fish, eggs, nuts and seeds. Fats are important for overcoming low libido because sex hormones (such as testosterone) are manufactured from the cholesterol contained within those foods. Fats will also help to keep tissues like the vagina lubricated and soft. Berries are high in antioxidants, which help optimise blood flow to the sex organs and oysters are rich in zinc, important for the production of sex hormones,” explains Dr Glenville.

Take an Omega 3 supplement – a multi-tasking hero.

Not only does this help reduce irritability and inflammation in the body, it also enhances your mood, helps balance your hormones, and aids healthy production of sex hormones.  Shona explains ‘it’s the building block of sex hormones in both men and women. It fights the build up of plaque in the arteries, thereby improving circulation and increasing sensation. Omega-3 fatty acids also help with sexual response by raising dopamine levels in the brain that trigger arousal. Try Natures Plus Ultra Omega 3/6/9.

Up your B vitamins intake. ‘The amount of vitamin B in the body correlates with the amount of sex hormones released. Any deficiencies can lead to lethargy and fatigue – meaning more sleep and less sex! They also play a vital role in reducing anxiety; if you’re anxious, your sexual desire can be diminished. They help increase energy levels and improve blood flow – both necessary for a good, healthy sex life. Make sure you eat wholegrains, broccoli, chickpeas and spinach. You can also try taking a ready formula, such as Once A Day Energy B+C by Quest Vitamins £5.99.

Good news: dark chocolate can enhance your sex life!

Simply nibbling a few squares of the ‘good stuff’ after dinner, you’ll help lift your mood enormously, going from stressed to, well…sexy! “Go for quality (dark) chocolate (60-70 per cent cocoa solid), it contains the potential to relax you, intoxicate you and give you sheer pleasure, all thanks to a nutrient called phenethylamine. It does this by triggering those feel-good hormones, and, adding to its pleasure-factor, it provides us with tryptophan, which is a great relaxation chemical, helping quell any anxiety” says Barns.
